History of Globe Wernicke

Around 1890, Otto H. L. Wernicke, a German who had emigrated to the United States, designed a modular bookcase system. In 1892, he applied for a patent for it under the name ‘Sectional Stock-Case’. The design consisted of simple, stackable wooden boxes with an opening, a central partition and handles. The bookcase was particularly popular amongst professionals who moved house frequently and possessed large quantities of documents, such as lawyers. Through advertisements in the *North Western Law Reporter*, the bookcase came to be known as the ‘barrister bookcase’.

What materials does Globe Wernicke use for its bookcases?

Globe Wernicke storage cabinets are extremely durable. Thanks to their stackable design, they are suitable for any room and any purpose. Globe Wernicke cabinets are made from high-quality woods such as oak, mahogany, mindy and cedar, ensuring a long service life. As they are of such high quality, they last a very long time and are therefore also highly prized amongst antique collectors.

How do I assemble a Globe Wernicke bookcase?

Assembling a Globe Wernicke cabinet is very simple. First, place the separate base or the Atlas module with its integrated base.

How can you tell if a Globe Wernicke cabinet is genuine?

You can recognise an original Globe Wernicke cabinet by the brand name, which is often displayed as a logo or label on the inside or outside of the cabinet. The age of the cabinet depends on the design of the logo; over the years, the logo’s design has changed several times. As well as the logo, the cupboards can also be recognised by their finish, the materials used and how well the system fits together.

Which Globe Wernicke cupboard is best for me?

Which bookcase best suits your interior depends on the space available and how you intend to use it. If you have a lot of books or a large collection, people often opt for units with glass doors, as these allow the items to be beautifully displayed.
